Boggy Creek II

I can’t honestly say that I’ve seen Boggy Creek 1. It’s possible that I have and have completely forgotten it (that’s probably a good thing), but I can’t be certain. What I do know is that I have now witnessed Boggy Creek 2. Some films are so popular they warrant a sequel. Others achieve a cult status and demand a sequel. This particular film, if it’s anything like the first film, falls into neither category. Truth be told, I’m not sure what category to put it in. Writer/director/actor wanted to make money? Writer/director/actor didn’t know any better? Writer/director/actor wanted to be like Ed Wood???? Well considering this film probably didn’t make any cash and the fact that the writer co-wrote Sudden Impact (follow up to Dirty Harry) starring Clint Eastwood, I’m going to have to assume that this film came about because of some bizarre fascination with Ed Wood.

For nearly ten years, the swamps of Texarkana, Arkansas have been quiet. But now locals are once again reporting sightings of the legendary Boggy Creek Cretuare, only this time it has returned with a vengeance. After numerous town folk are brutally attacked, anthropologist Brian C. Lockhart and his team of student researchers venture into the swamps to investigate the reports. As Lockhart and three students head down to the muddy banks of the Sulfur River, they soon find that invading the territory of others exacts a price. Coming face to face with not one, but two primal terrors, Lockhart's team encounters the most harrowing and unforgettable secrets of Boggy Creek.

The film is presented to us in 1.85.1 anamorphic widescreen. The footage is filled with print damage and a ton of heavy grain. The colours aren’t too bad considering when the film was shot, the black levels really aren’t much to write home about. The stock footage used in the film is even worse then movie footage so they are very obvious when they show up. Due to the fact that this film is an old low low budget film, I understand some of the defects, but this transfer could have used a serious dose of movie dry cleaning.

Not far behind the video is the Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack. The levels in the film aren’t consistent. This may be due to poor recording when making the original but had Elite taken some time when making this DVD, they could have fixed this up quite a bit. As well, it seems as though the original recording might have been on the low side in terms of volume because there is a very noticeable hiss throughout the film as if they simply increased the volume of the mix and didn’t take into account that background noise. No other tracks, languages or even subtitles are found on this DVD.

The only extra to be found on this DVD is the film's original theatrical trailer. The trailer actually does a pretty decent job of advertising the film and had I not just finished watching it, would have made me want to!

So if you're watching the trailer online somewhere and thinking... hey that's pretty neat I wonder what the film is like, I'll tell you right now. It's not great! But it's not terrible either. Yeah I know. That doesn't exactly help you any now does it? I personally wouldn't purchase this film but I might rent it if I was really hurting for something I hadn't seen. Other then that, wait for it on a Sunday afternoon showing on your television. I'm sure some channel somewhere is showing it.
