Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason

After the success of the ever-so-charming Bridget Jones Diary,
many knew that a sequel was inevitable. And when the original author wrote the sequel,
there was no second thought about turning it into a movie. Thus we have Bridget Jones: The
Edge of Reason, the continuing misadventures of everyones favourite imperfect
princess Bridget Jones as she continues to find eternal love. This time around, Bridget
has been living in a relationship with Mark Darcy, which begins to go sour. At the same
time, Daniel Cleaver reappears in Bridgets life, claiming to be a changed man
or is he? While the film doesnt have as many laughs as last time, it retains its
charm and tenderness that fans fell in love with in the previous film. With this new DVD
release, fans can now bring this tender sequel home with them.
The single-disc release is a nice accent for the film that doesnt overshadow it.
The film itself comes in a sharp 2.40:1 widescreen image thats quite colourful,
though there seems to be a slight amount of grit in the image that appears periodically.
The sound is a standard clear 5.1 track that confines most of the action and sounds in the
front channels, with the rear channels playing some background ambiance noise rarely. The
extras on the disc are peculiar and dont really seem to fit together, but fans
shouldnt mind. You get deleted scenes and an alternate opening, a somewhat dull
director commentary, and a featurette on an animated sequence in the film. Then there are
the features that are meant to be more fun, but kinda seem separate when placed next to
the other extras. This includes a Whos Your Man? Quiz, which you can
play while you watch the film (a feature that is really more annoying than it is
entertaining), a featurette on the fight between the two male leads (yes, they do fight
again!), an interview featurette that discusses Bridgets and Marks love (???),
and a spoof interview where Bridget Jones, the character, interviews Colin Firth, the
actor (not as funny as it sounds).
Less laughs and more romance, fans of the first film will not be disappointed.
Youll get a big kick out of the second Mark Darcy-Daniel Cleaver fight, but between
that and a couple of other scenes, thats about as much excitement youll get
out of this film. Instead, you get a little more melodrama and a lot more romance in this
one, which is not necessarily a bad thing because it does touch on simple things like the
difficulty of being in a relationship, which is not often looked at in romance films. This
sequel takes a different approach from the first film, but you get the same result as
well, and fans will be happy. They will also be happy with this DVD; its not a great
DVD, but a reasonable one that will keep fans satisfied.
