This 1987 sequel to the original has finally been given a second chance
on DVD with a good selection of features and a brand new DiviMax transfer.
Like the original, the sequel features three different stories by Stephen
King, with the screenplay written by George Romero. All the stories are linked
by animation sequences that give the movie a “pulp” feeling.
The tales themselves are teenage-fueled fantasies, and though not as entertaining
as the original movie, the special effects are still pretty good for a low
budget 80’s flick.
The stories range from a possessed wooden Indian to a raft attacked by an
oil slick to a gruesome hitchhiker. Look for an appearance by special effects
guru Tom Savini as "The Creep" at the start of the movie.
Having seen this movie several times, I was looking forward to the improved
sound, but was disappointed. The 5.1 mix was unimpressive. There was no range
in the sound and no depth. A lot of times it sounded like the original mono
track.
The DiviMax transfer is an improvement over the original DVD release with
deeper colors and, for the first time, an anamorphic transfer. Special features
include a new documentary and commentaries.
Any fan of horror anthology movies should seek this one out and don’t forget
the original Creepshow while you’re at it.
