Got to love me some Nat King Cole! If youre picking up this
DVD its because you obviously dig the swing and sultry smoothness of the
"Kings" crooning. Its either that or your parents or grandparents
asked for it as a gift. If they did, then your elders have some serious musical taste my
friend.
"When I Fall in Love" is a great documentation of a piece of television
history, one of which I was shamefully unaware. It was the late 1950s when NBC went
against the grain and decided to put a show on the air hosted by Nat King Cole. Lets go
back a few and remember that this was a time when racism was still an "in"
thing, and how dare NBC put this talented, charismatic, appealing, star on the air for an
entire nation to see? What were they thinking!?! Unfortunately, there was serious and
rampant case of social density going on at that time and the Nat King Cole show only
lasted through its 1956 season and just into 1957.
If you are at all a fan of music you will most likely find something youll like
about this DVD. Its only 60 minutes long but does contain 20 performances taken from the
series. Intertwined with the performances are interviews with his wife, children,
including Natalie, other family members and former colleagues. The disc is narrated by
actor Dennis Haysbert (24, FAR FROM HEAVEN) and is an insightful look back on an
incredible performer. I havent mentioned the performances yet
needless to say
they are right on the money. There is a reason he was nicknamed "King."
The quality of the DVD is about as good as you could hope for. Lets remember all
the performances are from 1956/57. Television was in its infancy, and the technology for
recording sight and sound
by todays standards its what the French would call
"Tres horrible!" The video of the performances looks like old black and white
T.V. However, some tech-savvy audio guy cleaned up the sound on the footage and you are
left with some nice 5.1 Dolby surround. Sure youll get better sound off the new Nat
King Cole CD, but were in it for more than just the sound, right?
Thats about the whole gist of the DVD. No features to speak of, unless you count
appearances by Sammy Davis Jr. and Ella Fitzgerald as "features." If you do,
then you get those two and plenty others. And by the way, my favourite band is U2, I love
Radiohead, and have been to the last couple of Beastie Boys shows. What Im saying
is
dont steer clear from this DVD just because you dont know who this
old guy is. If you dig good music, youll definitely find something you like by the
original King.
