There werent a lot of people that knew what to expect
when La Femme Nikita first came out in 1990, but they were very pleased with what they
ended up with. La Femme Nikita is a full-out action-packed French thriller that spawned a
remake and a television series. The film, which features one of the strongest female
characters ever caught on film at that time, is about a murderous junkie who is given a
second chance at life by working as a secret agent for the government. Things become
rather difficult for her when she falls in love with a man that cannot know her true
profession, where she has to decide what comes first: love or espionage. The film became a
big hit back then and managed to bring a lot of attention towards the director and some of
the stars. While the film did have a bit of a life after its release with an unnecessary
remake and a short-lived television series, none of it could beat the original hit. La
Femme Nikita has now been finally released as a special edition DVD that should please
fans of the film. Along with a fairly decent transfer of the film and two 5.1 Dolby
Digital soundtracks in French and English, the disc contains segments that seem to be a
part of a longer making-of documentary. While there is a semi-interesting making-of
featurette offered here, there is a separate featurette on the sound of the film and some
short video segments that offer a little extra behind-the-scenes footage. All of this
could have been included in the making-of documentary, but was kept separate possibly to
make the special features list on the DVD seem longer. Still, if you enjoyed the film then
you might enjoy features offered here, though they dont add too much to the film
other than offering some extra insight. Also on disc is a tiny poster gallery and
trailers.
La Femme Nikita is a great action thriller from France that many people should check
out. If you are a fan of the television series Nikita, then youll probably enjoy
watching the film that inspired that show. It is a fun film with a good story and some
slick action scenes that most people should enjoy. If you like the film then you should be
happy with the DVD, but dont expect a magnificent special edition packed with great
special features. The film is great, but the DVD is only adequate. Enjoy it for the film.
