Oldboy

Man oh man oh man! This movie is one crazy ride. Quentin Tarantino, according to the box art, gives his seal of approval and I can see why. Even if the box is lying to me, I don’t care. Why? Cause I give it my seal of approval!!!!

Oh Dae-su is an ordinary Seoul businessman with a wife and a little daughter. After a drunken night on the town, he is abducted and locked up in a strange, private "prison." No one will tell him why he's there and who his jailer is and his fury builds to a single-minded focus of revenge. 15 years later, he is unexpectedly freed, given a new suit, a cell phone and 5 days to unravel the mystery and discover the identity of the enemy who had him imprisoned.

Oldboy is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. The picture is amazing! The colours, though they might seem odd to some (the look is intentional), are amazingly re-created. Chung Chung-hoon's amazing cinematography is well presented here. Black levels are nicely dark and yet still very detailed. I didn’t notice any grain or print damage nor any other kind of imperfection (maybe I was too wrapped up in the action and storyline).

Oldboy is presented with the original Korean language track in both Dolby Digital EX 5.1 Surround Sound and 5.1 DTS. Both tracks shine and sound superb. Clear dialogue, great oomph, and good levels throughout. There is also an English dubbed language track presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. It sounds almost as good as the Korean track. Whether you’re for dubbing or not, you shouldn’t complain that it is included. I personally usually enjoy a dubbed version as it allows me to enjoy the film rather then having to read the dialogue. But in this case, I have to say, I favoured the subbed version. The Korean voices just worked so much better then the English ones.

This DVD comes with a nice assortment of added content that should please most fans of the film. Director Park Chanwook and cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon provide an audio commentary full of technical knowledge Unfortunately, neither of them delve into the story enough. I would have really enjoyed hearing more about the characters in the film. There’s an interview with Park. Though short it helps us understand the filmmaker a bit more. A nice little extra is the fan trailer that won the Tartan Films Oldboy Trailer Contest. I thought it was interesting to compare it against the actual trailer for the film. There are some deleted/alternate scenes (with optional commentary by Park Chanwook) and while looking at them without commentary made them seem somewhat boring, once the commentary is turned on though, the scenes were much more interesting. Also included is a photo gallery and trailers for Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, H, Heroic Duo, Tetsuo, A Tale of Two Sisters and Wishing Stairs.

Though not as jammed packed in terms of extras as I would have liked, this DVD does aim to please. This is a film that should be owned by everyone. Right next to your copies of Swingers, Pulp Fiction, Snatch, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon should be a copy of Oldboy.
