Saved!

On the surface, Saved! seems like just another teen comedy. But as you start watching it, you realize it is much more than that. This well-written, humourous flick takes the teen comedy genre and adds a twist to it by placing it in a Christian school setting. The result is a funny and intelligent high school film that makes a commentary on religious upbringing. It is for this reason why the film was quite controversial on its release.

Saved! is about Mary, a girl who has led a good, spiritual life, and a attends a friendly, Christian school, until one day she received a bit of a revelation and begins to question her faith. As she tries to keep her ‘devilish’ secret and rediscover herself, Mary’s friends and family attempt to rescue her from certain downfall. Many viewed the film on its release as an attack on Christian ideals, and consequently was subject to many protests across the country. If those people had actually watched the film, they would have discovered that the film is quite moral in its Christian ways, and that it is merely a commentary on religious upbringing and those that use if for different purposes. The film is very intelligent and does have a good statement, all the while making you laugh along the way. While it does get rather tacky by the end, the film is still quite entertaining and is worth checking out. While the film did receive some attention, it never developed that much of an audience. But like any good film, it is bound to be discovered on DVD.

The single disc DVD release comes with a decent and mild transfer of the film. The image is nothing special, and the audio is clear and ordinary. Nothing really worth mentioning here. The disc does contain a fair bit of bonus features, but again it is nothing to get too excited about. Two commentaries are on the DVD; one with the director, producer and co-writer, which is just your run of the mill commentary, and another with two of the stars of the film, who don’t really have too much to say and can actually be a little irritating sometimes. "Heaven Help Us" is your standard EPK featurette. The bloopers are funny but unforgettable. The only interesting feature is the Saved! Revelations, a series deleted scenes that were removed to get a PG rating. Some of it is rather amusing, and it’s interesting to note that if this DVD was released six months later, those scenes would have been put back into the film and it would have been released as an ‘Unrated Director’s Cut’, the latest trend in DVD today. The disc also contains deleted scenes and the film’s trailer.

Saved! is an original, amusing teen comedy with a twist. The commentary on religion gives the film more intellect and freshness while still being funny and appealing to teens as well as a larger audience. It’s not going to be a ground-breaking film, but it does offer something new in this genre. Though the movie is great, the DVD is not as interesting. It’s not necessary a disappointing disc, just an uninteresting one. That shouldn’t stop you from watching this great teen comedy. Anyone will enjoy this film, teen or not, religious or not. Don’t worry, you won’t go to hell after watching Saved!
